Understanding Tooth Extraction

When Removing a Tooth Is the Best Way to Protect Your Oral Health

Preserving your natural teeth is always the goal, but there are situations where removing a tooth is the healthiest option. When a tooth is severely damaged, infected, or causing complications, a professional tooth extraction can relieve discomfort, prevent further oral health problems, and support your long-term dental health. Every extraction begins with a comprehensive evaluation to determine the most appropriate treatment for your needs.

A Conservative Approach

We always explore options to preserve your natural tooth before recommending an extraction.

When Extraction Becomes Necessary

A tooth may need to be removed when it's severely damaged, infected, or no longer restorable.

Personalized Treatment Planning

Every extraction begins with a thorough examination and diagnostic imaging to determine the best treatment approach.

Protecting Your Overall Oral Health

Removing a problematic tooth can help protect neighboring teeth, gums, and supporting bone from further complications.

Know the Warning Signs

Signs You May Need a Tooth Extraction

Not every toothache requires an extraction, but persistent pain, infection, or significant damage shouldn’t be ignored. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, a dental evaluation can help determine whether a tooth can be restored or if extraction is the healthiest option for protecting your smile.

Persistent Tooth Pain

Ongoing tooth pain may indicate advanced decay or infection.

Swollen or Bleeding Gums

Inflamed gums around a tooth can signal an underlying dental problem.

Severe Tooth Sensitivity

Sharp sensitivity to hot or cold may indicate significant tooth damage.

Loose Teeth

Teeth that feel loose may have lost the support needed to remain stable.

Difficulty Chewing

Pain or discomfort while eating may require professional evaluation.

Jaw Pain

Persistent jaw discomfort can sometimes be associated with a damaged or impacted tooth.

Facial Swelling

Swelling around the face or jaw may indicate an infection that needs prompt attention.

Wisdom Tooth Discomfort

Pain around impacted wisdom teeth may require evaluation and treatment.

Extraction & Oral Surgery Options

Personalized Treatment Based on Your Dental Needs

No two extractions are exactly alike. Depending on the condition of your tooth, its position, and your overall oral health, your dentist may recommend a simple extraction, a surgical extraction, wisdom tooth removal, or another oral surgery procedure. Every treatment plan is personalized to provide safe, comfortable, and effective care.

A simple extraction is performed when the tooth is fully visible above the gumline and can be removed using specialized dental instruments under local anesthesia.

Recommended For

Benefits

Surgical extraction is recommended when a tooth hasn’t fully erupted or is difficult to access. The procedure may involve a small incision and additional techniques to safely remove the tooth.

Recommended For

Benefits

Wisdom teeth often don’t have enough space to erupt properly, which can lead to pain, infection, crowding, and damage to neighboring teeth. Early removal can help prevent future complications.

Recommended For

Benefits

Some dental conditions require advanced oral surgery to treat impacted teeth, preserve bone, or manage urgent dental problems. Every procedure is tailored to your specific oral health needs.

FAQS

Everything you need to know about Tooth Extractions & Oral Surgery

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which a damaged, infected, impacted, or severely decayed tooth is removed from the mouth.

Extractions are recommended when a tooth cannot be saved through restorative treatments such as fillings, crowns, or root canal therapy.

A tooth extraction may be necessary if you have:

  1. Severe tooth decay
  2. Advanced gum disease
  3. A broken tooth beyond repair
  4. An impacted wisdom tooth
  5. Overcrowded teeth before orthodontic treatment
  6. A dental infection that cannot be treated effectively

Your dentist will thoroughly evaluate your oral health before recommending an extraction.

Most patients experience little to no pain during a tooth extraction because local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area.

You may feel pressure during the procedure, but discomfort is minimal.

Mild soreness after the extraction is normal and can typically be managed with medication and proper aftercare.

A simple tooth extraction can often be completed in 20 to 40 minutes.

More complex procedures, such as impacted wisdom tooth extractions, may take longer depending on the tooth's position and condition.

After your extraction, you should:

  1. Bite gently on the gauze provided
  2. Rest for the remainder of the day
  3. Avoid smoking and drinking through a straw
  4. Eat soft foods for several days
  5. Follow all post-operative instructions provided by your dentist
  6. Maintain good oral hygiene while avoiding the extraction site

Following these guidelines helps promote proper healing and reduces the risk of complications.

Most patients begin feeling significantly better within a few days.

Initial healing typically occurs within one to two weeks, although complete healing of the extraction site may take several weeks depending on the complexity of the procedure.

Yes. Once the numbness wears off, you can eat soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup, applesauce, and smoothies.

Avoid crunchy, spicy, hot, or hard foods until the extraction site has healed properly.

Common signs of an impacted wisdom tooth include:

  1. Jaw pain
  2. Swollen or tender gums
  3. Difficulty opening your mouth
  4. Persistent bad breath
  5. Headaches
  6. Pain in the back of the mouth

If you experience these symptoms, schedule an evaluation with your dentist as soon as possible.

In many cases, replacing an extracted tooth is recommended to prevent shifting teeth, bite problems, and bone loss.

Options may include dental implants, bridges, or dentures.

Your dentist will discuss the best solution based on your individual needs.

Yes. Always Smile Dental Care provides emergency dental services and can perform urgent tooth extractions when necessary to relieve pain, treat infection, or address dental trauma.

If you are experiencing severe tooth pain or swelling, contact the office immediately.

Dry socket is a condition that occurs when the protective blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged before the area has healed. To reduce your risk:

  1. Avoid smoking
  2. Do not use straws
  3. Avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours
  4. Follow all aftercare instructions carefully

Proper care significantly lowers the likelihood of developing dry socket.

If a tooth can be saved, a root canal may be the preferred option.

However, if the tooth is severely damaged, fractured, infected beyond repair, or causing other oral health issues, an extraction may be recommended.

A comprehensive dental examination will determine the best treatment for your situation.

I had a great experience as a new patient coming in for a cleaning. The office is very clean, and the entire team was professional and welcoming. I hadn’t been to the dentist in a while because my last experience elsewhere was very underwhelming. I’ve been searching for a new dentist, and Always Smile Dental was right under my nose this whole time!

They’re very tech savvy, which I love. You’re able to book your appointment and I was able to complete the necessary paperwork online. Everyone that I interacted with was very accommodating and pleasant, especially Martha at the front desk.

Dr. Fanuswala was wonderful and honestly made me feel comfortable getting back into going to the dentist lol. She was warm, welcoming, and really put me at ease.

I’ve already recommended this office to family and friends after my visit today. I’m happy that I found them!

I started there when they just got opened at the North Brunswick location. I was actually one of the very first patients there and I must say since then I have been extremely satisfied with my dental care. Prior to my visit there I had not gone to a dental visit in over 7 years because of bad experiences. But I told the Doctor and the dental assistant there that I was gonna put my trust and dental care in their hand from that day and until now my care surely have been in great hands. Thank you for allowing me to trust in your care and for taking great care of my dental health. You all rock!!!!
Dr. Farida Fanuswala is very knowledgeable and a thorough professional.

She took the time to listen to all of my concerns and never made me feel rushed, instead answered all my questions with patience and expertise.

The staff is so compassionate and the facility is very neat and clean.

I would highly recommend this dental office!!

UPDATE: I am being harassed with emails and calls. I blocked their number and they’ve been calling me all hours of day and night from a blocked number! Sent a cease and desist letter and they’re claiming that I will be contacted by their external counsel ! What a joke! I’m reporting them to the board and BBB

I gave her an opportunity to fix my fillings and address my concerns. But Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me! So no thank you. How many chances do you need to provide basic dental care?

Original:
More like never smile dental care

Pro: The dentist and staff are friendly

HOWEVER:

kindness is not enough! I can’t floss any of my fillings, they are shaped irregularly, discolored, uneven and not smooth. I only came here because they were open on weekends and had “good reviews” but I was better off not seeking dental care & letting my teeth be.

I genuinely regret coming here

These reviews are collected after the first consultation.

Even after the consultation the doctor and staff are sweet but she lacks attention to detail and even basic expertise. I didn’t come for a veneer or implant. A filling is basic and still all of them were faulty, rushed and not to the same standards as any other dentist I’ve been to. She did my front teeth fillings and they look
Horrible and when i try to floss they get stuck.

When i came for a crown repair. She didn’t repair the post. She just put a crown on top of decay! She claimed my insurance would deny it but never even tried. Went to a new dentist and it was approved. Not just that but she claimed I needed fillings on my left side and I’ve seen 3 dentists at my other dental practice and all agree no extra fillings are needed.

Come here at your own risk. Many of These reviews aren’t posted organically. After your initial consult, you are bombarded to leave a review. With all the good reviews and based on my pre dental work of course I wouldn’t have anything bad to say so beware. I just wouldn’t feel right recommending this place or not making a PSA because many dentists take advantage of their patients and just want to charge your insurance.

Visiting a dentist in general is not fun at all but the team here really makes sure that you're taken care well. I have had the fortune of being treated by Dr. Farida. I did 2 fillings and for a root canal, she referred me to Middlesex Endodontics in Edison. The procedures were smooth. The admin team ensured that they coordinate with the insurance. Overall they treat you with so much care & affection. Hopefully my teeth is fine going forward but any issues Dr. farida and the team at Always Smile will be my go to!!

I was in search for a dentist and I came across a Dr. who had graduated from NYU, and I knew that I will not be wrong in my judgement if I took an appointment with her and also they were taking my insurance. It was my first visit. I found the clinic spacious with good hygienic standards with friendly team assisting the Dr. On meeting Dr. Farida, I noticed that she was gentle & caring, answering my queries patiently, making me feel safe & secured in her hands. She diagnosed my concerns, and I was referred to an Orthodontist. This proved that she was well experienced, knowledgeable, and won my faith & trust. On follow up visit I noticed that she had integrity and high ethical standards. I strongly recommend Dr.Farida Fanuswala of Always Smile Dental Care, NJ, and you will always smile after being her patient.

The front desk lady, Abu and Goutham were all friendly. They helped create a more relaxing environment that made me feel less anxious. The office is not pretentious and feels comfortable. After the cleaning, Dr. Fanuswala explained what was going on with my teeth in a calm manner and eased all my worries. After the exam, Goutham helped schedule my followup appointment for my fillings (wish I got more explanation since it’d be my first time). Overall, great first visit and highly recommended.
