  3. Essential Gum Care

Essential gum care focuses on maintaining healthy gums, which are vital for overall oral wellness. It involves the prevention and treatment of gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

Gum care treatments include deep cleanings (scaling and root planing), bacterial control, and ongoing maintenance to support healthy gum tissue and prevent inflammation.

Routine services include preventive care such as dental cleanings, exams, and fluoride treatments, which are essential for preventing cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems. General dentists perform restorative procedures like fillings, crowns, and bridges to repair damaged or decayed teeth, as well as conduct root canals to address issues with tooth pulp.

Key Benefits of Essential Gum Care

Proper gum care strengthens the foundation of your teeth and prevents long-term oral health issues.

Healthy gums are essential for a healthy smile, ensuring long-term stability and confidence in your oral wellness.

Understanding Gum Disease

Healthy Gums Are the Foundation of a Healthy Smile

Your gums do much more than support your teeth—they also protect the underlying bone and surrounding tissues that keep your smile healthy. When plaque and bacteria build up along the gumline, they can cause inflammation that may progress from mild gum irritation to advanced periodontal disease if left untreated. Early diagnosis and professional care can help protect your oral health and prevent more extensive treatment in the future.

Healthy Gums Matter

Healthy gums support your teeth and help protect the bone and tissues beneath them.

It Begins with Plaque

Plaque and bacteria accumulating along the gumline can trigger inflammation and gum disease.

Gingivitis: The Early Stage

Red, swollen, or bleeding gums are often early warning signs. With timely professional care and improved oral hygiene, gingivitis is typically reversible.

Periodontitis: Advanced Gum Disease

Without treatment, gum disease can progress, causing gum recession, bone loss, loose teeth, and an increased risk of tooth loss. Professional periodontal treatment helps manage the condition and protect your oral health.

Recognize the Early Warning Signs

Signs You May Need Periodontal Treatment

Gum disease often develops gradually, and its early symptoms can be easy to overlook. If you notice changes such as bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or gum recession, it’s important to schedule a periodontal evaluation. Early treatment can help prevent the condition from progressing and protect your long-term oral health.

Bleeding Gums

Healthy gums shouldn't bleed during brushing or flossing.

Persistent Bad Breath

Ongoing bad breath may be caused by bacteria below the gumline.

Swollen or Tender Gums

Inflammation can be an early sign of gum disease.

Receding Gums

Teeth appearing longer may indicate gum recession.

Loose Teeth

Advanced gum disease can weaken the tissues supporting your teeth.

Pain While Chewing

Discomfort during eating may point to an underlying periodontal issue.

Pus Around the Gums

This may indicate an active gum infection requiring prompt care.

Changes in Your Gum Health

If your gums don't look or feel healthy, it's worth having them evaluated.

Every patient has unique periodontal needs, which is why we offer a range of preventive and therapeutic gum care services. From routine evaluations and professional cleanings to deep periodontal therapy and ongoing maintenance, your treatment plan is tailored to help restore and maintain healthy gums.

Understanding the Risk Factors

What Can Increase Your Risk of Gum Disease?

Gum disease doesn’t develop from a single cause. While plaque buildup is a major contributor, several lifestyle, medical, and genetic factors can increase your risk. Understanding these risk factors can help you take proactive steps to protect your gums and maintain long-term oral health.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Inadequate brushing and flossing allow plaque to build up along the gumline.

Smoking & Tobacco Use

Tobacco use increases the risk of gum disease and can slow healing.

Diabetes

People with diabetes may be more susceptible to periodontal infections.

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy, menopause, and hormonal fluctuations can affect gum health.

Genetics

Some individuals may have a higher genetic risk of developing gum disease.

Chronic Stress

Stress can weaken your immune response and contribute to inflammation.

Certain Medications

Some medications may contribute to dry mouth or other gum-related concerns.

Multiple Risk Factors

Having one or more risk factors doesn't guarantee gum disease, but regular visits helps identify and manage concerns early.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Benefits of Professional Gum Care

Professional periodontal care does more than treat existing gum disease—it helps protect your teeth, improve your oral health, and support your overall well-being. Addressing gum concerns early can reduce the risk of complications and help maintain a healthier smile for years to come.

Stops Disease Progression

Removes harmful bacteria to help prevent further damage.

Preserves Natural Teeth

Healthy gums provide the support needed to keep teeth stable.

Improves Gum Appearance

Reduces swelling, redness, and signs of gum recession.

Fresher Breath

Eliminates bacteria that contribute to persistent bad breath.

Supports Overall Health

Reducing chronic oral inflammation may benefit your general wellness.

Boosts Confidence

Healthy gums and a healthy smile can improve self-confidence.

Accurate Assessment

How We Diagnose Gum Disease

At Always Smile Dental Care, an accurate diagnosis is the first step toward effective periodontal treatment. We perform a thorough evaluation of your gums, teeth, and supporting bone to identify signs of gum disease, assess its severity, and create a personalized treatment plan focused on protecting your long-term oral health.

  • Step 01

    Periodontal Probing

We measure the depth of the spaces around each tooth to assess gum health.

  • Step 02

    Digital X-Rays

Digital imaging helps identify bone loss and detect concerns beneath the gumline.

  • Step 03

    Visual Examination

We examine your gums for signs of redness, swelling, recession, and inflammation.

  • Step 04

    Medical History Review

Your medical history helps us identify health factors that may affect your periodontal health and treatment plan.

Early diagnosis leads to more conservative treatment.

Identifying gum disease in its early stages allows us to recommend effective treatments before more advanced periodontal problems develop.

Daily Prevention

Simple Habits That Help Keep Your Gums Healthy

Professional periodontal care is essential, but maintaining healthy gums also depends on consistent daily oral hygiene. Small habits practiced every day can help reduce plaque buildup, support healthy gums, and lower your risk of developing periodontal disease.

Brush Twice Daily

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste.

Floss Daily

Remove plaque from areas your toothbrush can't reach.

Use Antibacterial Mouthwash

Help reduce bacteria that contribute to gum disease.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Choose nutrient-rich foods that support healthy gums.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Routine checkups help detect problems before they progress.

FAQS

Everything you need to know about Essential Gum Care

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums caused by plaque and bacteria buildup around the teeth.

If left untreated, it can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss.

Common early signs include:

  1. Red or swollen gums
  2. Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  3. Persistent bad breath
  4. Tender gums
  5. Gum recession
  6. Increased tooth sensitivity

If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to schedule a dental evaluation as soon as possible.

Healthy gums provide the foundation for strong teeth.

Poor gum health can lead to tooth loss and has also been linked to systemic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues.

Depending on the severity of the condition, treatments may include:

  1. Professional dental cleanings
  2. Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning)
  3. Periodontal maintenance therapy
  4. Antibiotic treatment
  5. Personalized oral hygiene recommendations

Scaling and root planing is a deep-cleaning procedure that removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gum line.

It also smooths tooth roots to help gums reattach to the teeth and reduce inflammation.

You may need periodontal treatment if you experience:

  1. Bleeding gums
  2. Chronic bad breath
  3. Loose teeth
  4. Gum recession
  5. Deep pockets around teeth
  6. Swollen or painful gums

A comprehensive dental exam can determine the best treatment plan for your needs.

In its earliest stage (gingivitis), gum disease can often be reversed with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene habits.

More advanced periodontal disease can be managed and controlled but may require ongoing treatment.

Most gum treatments are performed with patient comfort in mind. Local anesthesia may be used during deep cleaning procedures to minimize discomfort.

Many patients report only mild sensitivity afterward.

You can reduce your risk of gum disease by:

  1. Brushing twice daily
  2. Flossing every day
  3. Using an antimicrobial mouthwash
  4. Avoiding tobacco products
  5. Maintaining regular dental checkups and cleanings
  6. Following your dentist's oral care recommendations

Most patients should visit the dentist every six months for preventive care.

Patients with periodontal disease may require more frequent periodontal maintenance visits, typically every three to four months.

Yes. Advanced periodontal disease can damage the gums and supporting bone structures, causing teeth to become loose and eventually fall out if treatment is delayed.

Research suggests a connection between gum disease and several health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and complications during pregnancy.

Maintaining healthy gums is an important part of overall wellness.

Many dental insurance plans provide coverage for periodontal evaluations, deep cleanings, and maintenance treatments.

Coverage varies by plan, and the office team can help verify your benefits.

Always Smile Dental Care provides comprehensive periodontal care using modern techniques and a patient-centered approach.

The team focuses on early detection, effective treatment, and long-term maintenance to help patients achieve healthier gums and healthier smiles.

I had a great experience as a new patient coming in for a cleaning. The office is very clean, and the entire team was professional and welcoming. I hadn’t been to the dentist in a while because my last experience elsewhere was very underwhelming. I’ve been searching for a new dentist, and Always Smile Dental was right under my nose this whole time!

They’re very tech savvy, which I love. You’re able to book your appointment and I was able to complete the necessary paperwork online. Everyone that I interacted with was very accommodating and pleasant, especially Martha at the front desk.

Dr. Fanuswala was wonderful and honestly made me feel comfortable getting back into going to the dentist lol. She was warm, welcoming, and really put me at ease.

I’ve already recommended this office to family and friends after my visit today. I’m happy that I found them!

I started there when they just got opened at the North Brunswick location. I was actually one of the very first patients there and I must say since then I have been extremely satisfied with my dental care. Prior to my visit there I had not gone to a dental visit in over 7 years because of bad experiences. But I told the Doctor and the dental assistant there that I was gonna put my trust and dental care in their hand from that day and until now my care surely have been in great hands. Thank you for allowing me to trust in your care and for taking great care of my dental health. You all rock!!!!
Dr. Farida Fanuswala is very knowledgeable and a thorough professional.

She took the time to listen to all of my concerns and never made me feel rushed, instead answered all my questions with patience and expertise.

The staff is so compassionate and the facility is very neat and clean.

I would highly recommend this dental office!!

UPDATE: I am being harassed with emails and calls. I blocked their number and they’ve been calling me all hours of day and night from a blocked number! Sent a cease and desist letter and they’re claiming that I will be contacted by their external counsel ! What a joke! I’m reporting them to the board and BBB

I gave her an opportunity to fix my fillings and address my concerns. But Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me! So no thank you. How many chances do you need to provide basic dental care?

Original:
More like never smile dental care

Pro: The dentist and staff are friendly

HOWEVER:

kindness is not enough! I can’t floss any of my fillings, they are shaped irregularly, discolored, uneven and not smooth. I only came here because they were open on weekends and had “good reviews” but I was better off not seeking dental care & letting my teeth be.

I genuinely regret coming here

These reviews are collected after the first consultation.

Even after the consultation the doctor and staff are sweet but she lacks attention to detail and even basic expertise. I didn’t come for a veneer or implant. A filling is basic and still all of them were faulty, rushed and not to the same standards as any other dentist I’ve been to. She did my front teeth fillings and they look
Horrible and when i try to floss they get stuck.

When i came for a crown repair. She didn’t repair the post. She just put a crown on top of decay! She claimed my insurance would deny it but never even tried. Went to a new dentist and it was approved. Not just that but she claimed I needed fillings on my left side and I’ve seen 3 dentists at my other dental practice and all agree no extra fillings are needed.

Come here at your own risk. Many of These reviews aren’t posted organically. After your initial consult, you are bombarded to leave a review. With all the good reviews and based on my pre dental work of course I wouldn’t have anything bad to say so beware. I just wouldn’t feel right recommending this place or not making a PSA because many dentists take advantage of their patients and just want to charge your insurance.

Visiting a dentist in general is not fun at all but the team here really makes sure that you're taken care well. I have had the fortune of being treated by Dr. Farida. I did 2 fillings and for a root canal, she referred me to Middlesex Endodontics in Edison. The procedures were smooth. The admin team ensured that they coordinate with the insurance. Overall they treat you with so much care & affection. Hopefully my teeth is fine going forward but any issues Dr. farida and the team at Always Smile will be my go to!!

I was in search for a dentist and I came across a Dr. who had graduated from NYU, and I knew that I will not be wrong in my judgement if I took an appointment with her and also they were taking my insurance. It was my first visit. I found the clinic spacious with good hygienic standards with friendly team assisting the Dr. On meeting Dr. Farida, I noticed that she was gentle & caring, answering my queries patiently, making me feel safe & secured in her hands. She diagnosed my concerns, and I was referred to an Orthodontist. This proved that she was well experienced, knowledgeable, and won my faith & trust. On follow up visit I noticed that she had integrity and high ethical standards. I strongly recommend Dr.Farida Fanuswala of Always Smile Dental Care, NJ, and you will always smile after being her patient.

The front desk lady, Abu and Goutham were all friendly. They helped create a more relaxing environment that made me feel less anxious. The office is not pretentious and feels comfortable. After the cleaning, Dr. Fanuswala explained what was going on with my teeth in a calm manner and eased all my worries. After the exam, Goutham helped schedule my followup appointment for my fillings (wish I got more explanation since it’d be my first time). Overall, great first visit and highly recommended.
